Automating Creativity and Art Creation using AI
I haven’t always understood or appreciated abstract art. I went to my first gallery a few years ago and when I saw one the first few artworks on display, I said “I can make that”.
A few years later, that progress in AI and image technology allows us to not only mimic art styles but also merge them into completely unique compositions.
I’m this piece we look at our process of creating abstract art using AI.
The Idea Stage
Everything starts with an idea. Normally, I usually get my ideas from things I’ve seen in during the day or when going out, thoughts about life, reality and more. Art is created from inspiration mainly and it has been like that for centuries.
For example, In the 17th and 18th centuries, some artists were influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment, such as reason, progress, and liberty. They formulated ideas for artworks that reflected their views on society, politics, and morality. In the 21st century, its no different! Just different views and opinions.
With advent of technology and more interestingly , generative AI we can search the web in seconds for an idea. We don’t need to wait until we get inspiration, we go and manually find inspiration.
As a result, ideas are endless when it comes to coming up with concepts for artworks.
The Tools We Use to Generate the Images
Our Image Generator — TEV1
We use various tools to generate the artworks but the base layer for most for our artworks consists of a GPT model as the LLM.
There are several other prompt layers that transform your initial idea into a visualisation.
Our image generator, Theme Explorer V1, allows us to create thematic artworks at the click of a button. Creating multiple images allows you to see different ways to portray idea or theme visually. We usually opt for the abstract – cartoon aesthetic.
As you can see above, its not hard to generate artworks that are interesting, it does not require complex prompt engineering techniques as they are built in under the hood.
Using prompt engineering we can draw inspiration from hundreds of historically renowned abstract artist like Paul Klee or Wassily Kandinsky. Also, with an endless pool of art styles in the image generator as well, we can create new abstract works easily.
Reverse Image Search
AI vision algorithms improvements have been incredible in just a year. I recall testing a fairly basic reverse image search tool in an article from a year ago.
Since then, we now have several tools that can reverse engineer image prompts from an input image. This is good in the sense that no art style or image is off limits but its definitely allowing for copying to be rife in the art the community.
We used the tool for inspiration during the creation of our “VALENHEARTS” Valentine’s Day themed collection.
What Can You Use it For?
What is the purpose of seeing things you didn’t see before?
The brain has so many unanswered questions. We all have a lot things we would like to see or express.
You can fine-tune our models to be used for different research purposes.
Instead of cycling through art styles, you could maybe instead cycle through building designs for architecture? Or maybe through clothing pieces and out outfits?
You can envision real-life fears to perhaps remove your fear by exposure? A therapy device of some sorts?
Visualise and conceptualise your deepest thoughts about life. Like haven’t you wanted to see “cow riding unicorn”?
We want to see everything at Asycd so that is why we are generating hundreds of artworks.
The Future of Expression and Art
In the immediate future, the next few years, we expect to people to continue grappling with the idea of using AI creatively for art and expression. People just need a nudge and we feel that nudge is coming as people are always looking for something new. There are definitely people using it right for exactly what we are talking about I just don’t see it much I guess.
The distant future version of us will definitely be doing it!
Note: Art is the domain we chose to focus on but there are various of industries that could benefit from scale AI provides such as infrastructure and utilities as mentioned above.
