You should have received your annual 'Wrapped' report, revealing your streaming data for the year. Many were surprised to discover their most-streamed artist. Without realizing it, people are often fed the same type of music or artists simply because they have similar artists in their playlists.

Note: This study was done in 2016 with the origin of the data falling between 2010 and 2014. While not entirely reflective of current times, it should give you an idea of how certain genres of content can pull you in and the algorithms will continue to feed you it.

Conclusion
We believe the topic of recommendation algorithms creating polarized communities is not talked about enough. Where groups of people with large enough followings can direct a significant amount of attention to explicit, mentally damaging, and generally turbulent content. I think these algorithms, with technology we have available today, should be able to more effectively suggest content based on factors other than their recent viewing or listening history or even the viewing history of their close network.

At the same time, companies have the responsibility to be transparent with such actions to ensure the public is fully aware of how their content feed is formed, why they are being suggested some things and why they are not seeing certain other things.
